Trout Lilly Links:Erythronium americanum on Wikipedia
from site: Erythronium americanum (Trout lily, Yellow trout lily) is a herbaceous flowering plant in the family Liliaceae. The common name Trout lily arises from the appearance of its mottled, colored leaves which allegedly resemble the coloring of brook trout. It blooms in early spring with yellow flowers tinged with red. Trout lilies grow in colonies that can be up to 300 years old.
Trout Lilly at Wild About Gardening
This early bloomer appears briefly in the spring, often before all the snow and ice has left the ground. It is a common wildflower of eastern Canada’s deciduous — and sometimes mixed — woods but can adapt to partially shaded areas of many gardens.
Trout Lilly at Wildflowers Ontario
from site: The Trout Lily or Adder's Tongue is composed of a delicate yellow bell-shaped flower nestled between two mottled basal leaves. It can easily be confused with the common Bellwort but the leaves are of a different arrangement. It is found in open woodlands and low lying areas but not open fields. Often found in the same area as Trillium and Mayapple.
